2008 Program Statistics
Now in its second century of caring, the YWCA of
Central Alabama continues to serve women in adverse circumstances,
whether they live in poverty or in fear for their lives. The YW
is meeting critical needs by providing child care, domestic violence
services and affordable housing. It offers job and leadership training,
support groups, emergency shelter and advocacy. The agency allows
women to have hope and to make plans for a brighter future for
themselves and their children.
Here's a look at some of the ways the YWCA of Central
Alabama made a positive difference in 2008:
Domestic Violence
- Provided 7,813 nights of shelter for 163 adults and 172 children
- Provided legal advocacy services for 6,244 victims of domestic abuse
- Provided legal assistance to 659 victims of domestic violence
through the YWCA Family Law Center
- Provided victim support group services for 321 women and 111
children in Jefferson county
- Provided assistance to 1,897 people through the YW Crisis Line
- Reached 73 victims of domestic violence in collaboration with
the Department of Human Resources through SAIL (Special
Assessment Intervention Liaison)
- Maintained satellite offices in Blount and St. Clair counties
Child Care
- Provided 4,079 days of care to 60 children in KIDS Korner child
care center
- Provided 10,378 days of care to 80 children in Calico Corner child
care center
- Provided academic programs and tutoring to 87 children in the
After-School Enrichment Program
Housing
- Provided emergency housing and meals for 27 families (102
individuals) through Interfaith Hospitality House for a total of
6,379 nights of family shelter and 12,270 meals
- Provided 8,164 nights of transitional housing to 44 adults and 46
children (31 families) in 25 apartments in our downtown and
Woodlawn apartments
- Provided permanent housing to 114 individuals and 25 children in
82 apartments both in downtown Birmingham and Woodlawn
- Provided permanent housing to eight individuals with special needs
in Jefferson and St. Clair counties
- Provided permanent housing to 23 individuals in 22 apartments
designated for the elderly in Avondale (Birmingham) and
Rosedale (Homewood)
- Sold two single-family houses to low-income families in Edgewater
(unincorporated Jefferson County)
My Sister's Closet
- Provided professional clothing and accessories to 747 women from
21 shelters and referring agencies
- Provided 73 prom dresses to economically disadvantaged teenage
girls from area high schools
