Now in its second century of caring, the YWCA of Central Alabama continues to serve women in adverse circumstances, whether they live in poverty or in fear for their lives. The YW is meeting critical needs by providing child care, domestic violence services and affordable housing. It offers job and leadership training, support groups, emergency shelter and advocacy. The agency allows women to have hope and to make plans for a brighter future for themselves and their children.
Here's a look at some of the ways the YWCA of Central Alabama made a positive difference in 2010:
Domestic Violence
- provided 8,012 nights of shelter for 197 adults and 213 children
- provided legal advocacy services for 8,235 victims of domestic abuse
- provided legal assistance to 624 victims of domestic violence through the YWCA Family Law Center
- provided victim support group services for 700 women and 121 children in Jefferson County
- provided assistance to 2,664 people through the YW Crisis Line
- reached 37 victims of domestic violence in collaboration with the Department of Human Resources through SAIL (Special Assessment Intervention Liaison)
- maintained satellite offices in Blount and St. Clair counties
Child Care
- provided 30 children with 5,062 days of care in KIDS Korner child care center
- provided 46 children with 9,883 days of care in Calico Corner child care center
- provided academic programs and tutoring to 102 children through the After-School enrichment Program
Social Justice
- delivered the Heritage Panel program to 14 school groups, with a total of 283 students and 44 educators
- provided 42 people with free tax preparation through a collaboration between the YWCA and Impact Alabama
- Recruited 15 business and community partners to each host their own Stand Against Racism, a national YWCA
initiative
- Hosted a YWCA Stand Against Racism where 50 community members learned about racism in the current
Alabama State Constitution
Housing
- provided a total of 70,428 nights of safe, decent and affordable housing to 434 individuals
- provided 8,459 nights of emergency housing and 13,825 meals for 35 families (143 individuals) through the YWCA's Interfaith Hospitality House
- provided 22,617 nights of transitional housing for 57 adults and 75 children in 31 apartments in our downtown
and YWoodlawn apartments
- provided 26,145 nights of permanent rental housing for 98 adults and 23 children in 69 apartments both in
downtown Birmingham and in Woodlawn
- provided 3,351 nights of special needs permanent housing for nine adults and one child in Jefferson and St.
Clair counties
- provided 1,460 nights of permanent housing for physically disabled individuals in four apartments in Avondale
- provided 6,206 nights of permanent housing for elderly residents in 18 apartments in Avondale (Birmingham) and Rosedale (Homewood)
- provided 2,190 nights of permanent housing in a lease-to-own house in Woodlawn for one family
My Sister’s Closet
- provided professional clothing and accessories to 710 women from 32 shelters and referring agencies
- provided 150 prom dresses to economically disadvantaged teenage girls from area high schools
Santa's Workshop
- provided 121 families with 323 children from area shelters with holiday gifts, clothing and cheer
