MOMENTUM Legacy Project
2003-04: “Transformations”

View Pottery
In the introduction to our inaugural
class legacy quilt project, you read about the challenge of
“weaving a tapestry of leadership”. Building on
this theme, the second class of MOMENTUM participated in creating
a legacy project. Participants pulled together the threads of
leadership learned from their mentors, trainers and each other.
They created their own “quilt”...one made out of
clay vessels.
Pottery is one of the most important
traditions in all cultures and women considered the first real
potters. Pottery is crucial in many cultures, it may be a vessel
for food and drink, it may be used in ceremonies, or it may
contain spirits and deities. Most importantly, pottery offers
a medium for women to express themselves and symbolize the traditions
of their cultures in a form that is truly feminine—a vessel.
The vessel was a creative method
used to express personal growth and leadership development gained
during the MOMENTUM program. When assembled for the creative
session, the participants were inspired by remembrances and
reflections on how clay and pottery making has been a crucial
part of women’s lives for centuries. It is in claywork
that women were able to express themselves... the work of their
hands is always in evidence.
Tena Payne and Judy Baker, experienced
local potters, formed, glazed and fired the vessels adding their
own unique touch to the “pottery quilt”.
The following
pages shall be an inspiration to us all capturing the growth
and development of women leaders in central Alabama. Please
join us in thanking the women of the MOMENTUM 2003-04 class
and their mentors.
