"MOMENTUM is building leaders. The program provides women with the tools to become dynamic leaders and make change happen. In the long run, I suspect that Birmingham and Alabama will be the better for MOMENTUM having harnessed, focused, and polished the talents and the energy of the women who have the opportunity to participate."

Helen Kathryn Downs
Partner with Johnston Barton Proctor & Powell LLP and Member of inaugural 2002-2003 MOMENTUM class

MOMENTUM is currently on Hiatus and is scheduled to return in September 2009.

MOMENTUM is the premier initiative empowering a diverse group of promising women to achieve their full potential through development of leadership skills that positively impact the business, cultural and political environment in central Alabama.

Although the number of Alabama women in leadership is growing, Alabama women lag far behind their national counterparts in women's health, representation in government, salaries and other professional lifestyle metrics. MOMENTUM has been programmed to achieve the following:

  • Enhance central Alabama's image for women
  • Attract and retain the nation's brightest women to help solve business and community challenges
  • Train promising women to assume stronger leadership positions
  • Help network these women to learn and work on problems together

The MOMENTUM curriculum is provided through an opening retreat in September plus seven 1 day per month sessions occurring between October and May with a closing celebration. A senior mentor is made available to assist participants with specific elements identified in their personal leadership development plan.
