YWCA Helps Young Women Attend Prom

The YWCA Central Alabama was recently transformed into a beautiful boutique equipped with full length mirrors, bright lights and personal shoppers for the annual My Sister’s Closet Prom Dress Giveaway.

Many teenage girls are unable to attend their school’s dance because of economic hardship.  Throughout the year, My Sister’s Closet, the YW’s consignment boutique, collects new and gently used formal dresses from individuals and stores in the community for the Prom Dress Giveaway. The giveaway is open to economically disadvantaged young women from area high schools. Participants are selected by their school counselors. On the day of the Prom Dress Giveaway, the girls are invited to the YWCA to pick out a dress, shoes and accessories to wear to their school’s dance. This year, the Prom Dress Giveaway enabled more than 100 girls to attend their school’s prom.

In addition to the Prom Dress Giveaway, My Sister’s Closet provides women in adverse circumstances with gently used clothing.  It began as a way of providing clothing for women who have fled their homes to escape domestic violence, often with just the clothes on their back. It has since grown to assist all women seeking professional clothing, day-to-day wear, and prom dresses for young women.

The YWCA would like to give a big thank you to Belk for generously providing alteration services and the wonderful volunteers who donated dresses and served as personal shoppers.
