The YWCA Central Alabama held its 2009 Annual Meeting on January 29, 2010. More than 100 past and present YW Board and Junior Board members and community leaders filled the YWCA's Harbert Gymnasium to reflect on the past year and also to hear a preview of the great things to come in 2010!
The first order of business was the announcement of the newly elected members of the Board of Directors. The new members are: Rosie Butler, Community Volunteer, Augusta Dowd, Attorney, White Arnold & Dowd P.C., Debra Goldstein, Judge, Social Security Administration, Jamika Kirk, Assistant Director Experiential Education, UAB, Ricki Kline, Community Volunteer, Shannon Lisenby, Attorney, Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP, Teresa Odom, Multicultural Markets Coordinator, Alabama Power Company, Carla Roberson, Manager Education & Volunteer Services, Alabama Power Company and Lisa Sharp, Attorney, Balch & Bingham LLP.
The YWCA also announced the naming of several recently acquired apartment buildings in its neighborhood revitalization initiative, YWoodlawn, to honor the vision and dedication of many great supporters. Kelly’s Court in honor of Kelly Styslinger, YWCA Board Member; Dansby Court in honor of Tynesha and Karlos Dansby, YWCA supporters; and Sullivan’s Square in honor of Yolanda Sullivan, YWCA Board President.
The YWCA Central Alabama presented its Woman of Valor Award during its Annual Meeting to a long time board member and past Board President of the YWCA, Dr. Virginia D. Gauld. Inspired by Proverbs 3 and Proverbs 31, the YWCA’s Woman of Valor Award honors women of courage, faithfulness and devotion to family and community. Jenny, as she is referred to at the YW, has been involved with the YW since the mid-eighties, serving as the board president for five years and helping start KIDS Korner, the YW’s homeless child care. More recently, Jenny helped the YW further its domestic violence initiative in St. Clair County by heading the Inaugural Purse & Passion St. Clair County, which raised funds for the YW’s confidentially located domestic violence shelter in Pell City. It is fitting that in addition to the Woman of Valor Award, the YWCA’s new domestic violence shelter in St. Clair County was recently named Jenny’s Place in honor of Gauld.
The YW would like to thank all past and present board members for their hard work and dedication to the mission of the YW.
