Walk & Vigil to End Domestic Violence

October 17, 2019

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) and across the country, survivors, victim advocates, government officials, faith-based groups, health care providers, business leaders, police officers, and concerned citizens will take steps towards eliminating intimate partner violence. This year the YWCA Central Alabama will host the BELIEVE SURVIVORS campaign during DVAM.

Domestic Violence Awareness Walk & Vigil

Join the YWCA Central Alabama on October 17, 2019 beginning at 6 p.m. as we shine a light in honor of domestic violence victims. This year we will walk from the YWCA, 309 23rd Street North to the vigil in Kelly Ingram Park, 500 17th Street North, to show solidarity against domestic violence and intimate partner violence. The walk of seven blocks is representative of the minimum average of times it may take a victim to leave their abuser.  During the candlelight vigil, we will hear from clergy, survivors, government officials, and law enforcement. The Magic City Chapter of The Links, Inc. honors our “Silent Witnesses,”  those who have fallen victim to domestic violence, by calling their names aloud.  Domestic violence resources and prevention materials will be available. Walk with us to encourage others to break their silence and let us partner together to end this vicious cycle. Every step raises awareness! This event is open to all ages and is family, stroller, and pet friendly.

YWCA Domestic Violence Services

The YWCA provides emergency shelters for victims of domestic violence, manages a 24/7 crisis hotline, 205.322.HURT (4878), and provides court advocacy, legal representation, individual and group counseling for those in need. We are also the only provider of supervised visitation in Jefferson County, which is often necessary in DV cases.
