Our annual Mother’s Day Flower Sale is a project of the YWCA’s Junior Board—a dynamic and diverse group of young women. The dedicated Junior Board members work throughout the year, along with outstanding company representatives in the community, to make Flower Sale successful each year. The children in KIDS Korner, the YW’s homeless child care program, are counting on this success because all proceeds from Flower Sale benefit KIDS Korner.
KIDS Korner ensures that homeless children receive special care and individual attention during times of family crisis. On any given day, the YW provides 25 to 40 infants, toddlers and preschoolers residing in homeless shelters with quality, licensed child care in a warm nurturing environment. The YW has designed a special curriculum for young children whose shelter stay averages three to four months. KIDS Korner also provides a snack and two hot meals a day, as well as many special programs with groups like the Children’s Dance Foundation. Staff members are particularly sensitive to the children’s feelings of isolation and abandonment, and focus on building feelings of self worth. This program is free to homeless parents staying in area shelters and enables them to work, participate in job training, or look for housing. The YW gives a much-needed safety net for these children whose days and nights are filled with uncertainty and insecurity.
Participating companies from all over the Birmingham area take part in the Mother’s Day Flower Sale. A representative from each company collects orders from colleagues and friends for the sale. These company representatives are invaluable ambassadors in the community for the YW and KIDS Korner.
The Mother’s Day Flower Sale is also held at two retail tents in Mountain Brook Village and at Harbert Plaza downtown, on the Friday before Mother’s Day. At these tents, all flowers and plants are available for the public to purchase.
