transitional housing for women with children
The YWCA offers a transitional housing program for homeless women and their children in hopes of
rebuilding self-sufficiency in a safe and nurturing environment. This program includes housing and
supportive services that help families achieve stability as they move from emergency shelters toward
permanent housing and independent living.
What is this housing like? The YWCA maintains 23 furnished transitional apartments in downtown
Birmingham. Residency generally ranges from six to 18 months. Monthly rent, which includes utilities,
varies by income but never exceeds $275. Each two-bedroom apartment unit includes a galley kitchen
equipped with a stove, microwave, refrigerator and sink and a private bathroom with a toilet, sink and
shower. Community laundry machines are located on each floor. View

The YWCA expects a commitment on part of each individual to work hard at
achieving stability and move into permanent housing. To this end all
residents are required to be employed and working while all children must
attend school. Supportive services—one-on-one case management, daycare,
job readiness workshops, transportation assistance, etc—are
available to help families on their way toward an independent life.
The YWCA provides 24-hour security to ensure a safe, well-protected
environment. Access to housing floors is limited to residents and guests, and
males visiting guests are regulated to certain evening and weekend hours.
Who is eligible? Women with children interested in assistance and shelter through the YWCA’s
transitional housing program must be homeless according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development’s definition and must meet the following criteria:
- Single female
- At least 19 years of age
- Employed and working
- Not a full-time student
- No male children over 12 years old
