Five-year-old Terell wants to be a veterinarian when he grows up so he can be a “dog saver.” His classmate, Alexia, wants to be a chef because she loves chicken and rice, and 4-year-old Jonathan can’t wait to be “the best dad in the world.”
Even though they live in area homeless shelters, the children in YWCA Central Alabama’s KIDS Korner child development program have big dreams for the future. Thanks to the generosity of more than 650 guests and sponsors who attended the ninth annual KIDS Korner Luncheon, our precious YW children have a good chance of seeing their dreams come true.
That’s because the $153,726 (and counting) raised at the luncheon, which was held on Feb. 18, 2016 at the Cahaba Grand Conference Center and is a project of the YWCA’s Junior Board, will help ensure that our preschoolers will continue to have a safe place to learn, play and grow.
“Even though they may be living in stressful situations or in a shelter, they feel safe here,” said Rikki Ross, KIDS Korner director. “And when they feel safe, they realize it’s OK to take risks and try new things. Once that happens, the sky’s the limit.”
Those in attendance were moved by the stories of our children, who can imagine great possibilities because of the strong foundation they get in the nationally-accredited program. One child had a special message for the guests. "Thank you for loving us," she said.
The event would not have been possible without the leadership of co-chairs Annemarie Axon and Anne Lary and the members of their hardworking committee: Mary Bradley Anderson, Nancy Biggio, Mary Cox Brown, Mary Kathryn Bryant, Dana Cockrell, Laura Dunning, Rebecca Eubanks, Caroline Brady Fuerniss, Jeris Gaston, Anne Morris Hackney, Brenda Hackney, Key Hudson, Keeshna McKinney, Lauren Pearson, Lacey Scott, Tanya Shunnara, Cheryl Turner, Ann Watford, Rachel Weingartner and Ann Bailey White.
