Last Saturday it was once again time for Santa to bring his elves down to the YWCA and transform our gymnasium into Santa’s Workshop! With the help of over 300 volunteers, the YWCA was able to bring magic and excitement to families experiencing homelessness in Birmingham on this special day. The gymnasium was converted into a winter wonderland with the help of very gracious volunteers from Belk, which has shared a long relationship with the YWCA and Santa’s Workshop. Also in attendance were helpers from the Home Depot, assisting kids to help build gifts for their loved ones on this special day.
Santa’s Workshop brightens the holidays of homeless families by offering parents the opportunity to “shop” for free gifts for their children, while the children create festive holiday crafts to give their friends and family members. When families arrived at the YWCA, the children were led to the enchanting “workshop” while mothers were taken through multiple rooms of toys, games, books and clothes to give to their children. When families have little to give, in a season that’s all about giving, Santa’s Workshop takes the pressure off of parents and allows them to give gifts to their children without the worry of breaking their banks.
Spirits were high as smiles filled the YW on Saturday. Santa’s Workshop would not have been possible without the gracious help and cheerful attitudes of volunteers, donors, supporters and our outstanding Board and Junior Board members that take time to come make the holidays special for our community’s families in need. A very big YW thank you goes out to all of you.
