Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church (VHUMC) recently visited YWCA Central Alabama’s housing program for its annual game night. VHUMC facilitated an exciting game of bingo and provided a taco buffet for dinner, dessert and prizes for the YWCA’s resident adults and children who participated.
“It was a wonderful night of fun and fellowship, and we are very lucky to have Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church’s support,” said Parrish Knorr, senior director of Housing for YWCA Central Alabama. “They have adopted this event each year and they make it special every time.”
VHUMC has supported YWCA Central Alabama for several years in various ways. In 2017, the YWCA received a grant from VHUMC for Interfaith Hospitality House, the YWCA’s homeless shelter and Alabama’s only homeless facility serving two-parent families.
YWCA Central Alabama is committed to providing excellent housing and supportive programming for women, children and families within Central Alabama. The YWCA currently operates two domestic violence shelters at confidential locations in Jefferson and St. Clair counties, transitional and permanent housing for single women with or without children and permanent housing for elderly and developmentally disabled individuals.
The YWCA also operates a Family Resource Center (FRC) for the women, children and families living in its 58 permanent housing units in the Woodlawn community. The YWCA’s FRC supports the neighborhood through a range of programs including culinary classes, GED classes, computer training, an after-school homework clinic and healthy lifestyle programs for adults and children.
