Preventing the Summer Slide

The importance of summer enrichment is becoming more and more important to the children that the YWCA serves. Over the past year, the YWCA has participated in a citywide workgroup sponsored by Belk and the Summer Learning Institute to determine summer needs, strengths and develop a work plan. This research indicated that children experience a learning phenomenon called "Summer Slide." This means that children who do not maintain their academic skills through the summer experience a loss. This is especially concerning for children who may already be behind.

YWCA Central Alabama Hosts Summer CREW Work Program for Area Teens

Summer is in full swing in YWoodlawn and the housing staff and AmeriCorps members at the Family Resource Center are working cooperatively with the Woodlawn Foundation to host the Summer CREW program that is providing work training and enrichment opportunities for our YWoodlawn teens age 14-18.

YWCA Central Alabama Hosts 2011 Annual Meeting

More than 100 past and present YW Board and Junior Board members and community leaders attended the Annual Meeting of the YWCA Central Alabama on Tuesday, January 31.

YWCA Participates in Statewide Day of Giving

On Thursday, February 2nd, the YWCA Central Alabama will partner with hundreds of other Alabama nonprofits in the inaugural Alabama Gives Day, a statewide day of giving. Alabama Gives Day is a 24 hour event that starts at midnight on February 2nd and concludes at 11:59 p.m. Through the combined marketing efforts of local media and participating nonprofits, Alabamians will be driven to a central donation website. The website allows donors to choose the nonprofit they wish to support and to make their gift.

YWCA Partners with Girls on the Run to Empower Young Girls

The YWCA Central Alabama has partnered with Girls on the Run to provide a healthy after-school activity to build self-esteem for girls in YWoodlawn. Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a positive youth development program which combines an interactive curriculum and running to inspire self-respect and healthy lifestyles in pre-teen girls.
