Vestavia Hills Elementary East Brings Holiday Joy to YW Children

Students from Vestavia Hills Elementary East shared some holiday cheer with the children in KIDS (Kids in Distress) Korner, the YW’s child care for children of homeless families. Cathy Wall’s third grade class, also known as Wall’s Winners, took a field trip to downtown Birmingham to hand deliver brand new toys that they selected for the children served by the YWCA. 

Santa's Workshop Brings Holiday Magic to YWCA

Once again, this year, the YWCA Central Alabama was transformed into the North Pole for its annual holiday event, Santa’s Workshop. With the help of more than 200 volunteers, the YWCA was able to make the season a little brighter for homeless families in the Birmingham area on one special day. Thanks to Belk, the nation’s largest privately owned mainline department store company with 301 Belk stores located in 16 Southern states, the elves on their visual design team turned the gymnasium into a winter wonderland – Santa’s Workshop!

KPMG Hosts Book Drive to Benefit YWCA Central Alabama

This holiday season, KPMG launched Operation Bookitecture, an exciting firm-wide community service project related to KPMG's Family for Literacy program. Understanding what a significant impact books have in the lives of young children, employees at KPMG's Birmingham office recently donated new and gently-used books to help foster the imaginations of the special children whom the YW serves.

YWCA Hosts Lunch and Learn About Predatory Lending Practices

YWCA Central Alabama and NCCJ Host Inaugural Race Against Racism

As a part of its mission of eliminating racism and empowering women, the YWCA Central Alabama recently partnered with the National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ) of Alabama to sponsor the inaugural Race Against Racism 5K as a part of The Ruben Studdard Celebration Weekend.

With over 600 participants in its first year, the race was intended to unite people of all races, demonstrate our community's commitment to eliminating racism and celebrate our diversity.

YW Junior Board Hosts Festival Full of Tricks and Treats

The YWCA's Junior Board of Directors recently partnered with YWCA AmeriCorps members to host a Fall Festival for the children served through the YWCA's child care and After-School Enrichment Program. The Fall Festival provides an opportunity for children to be creative, win prizes and enjoy the fall season in a safe environment, since some children served by the YW do not live in safe neighborhoods.

YWCA Central Alabama and NCCJ to Host Race Against Racism

The YWCA Central Alabama and the National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ) of Alabama will be sponsors hosting the Race Against Racism 5K as a part of The Ruben Studdard Celebration Weekend on November 18, 2012. The race will begin at 9 a.m. downtown at Linn Park in the heart of Birmingham and near the historical Civil Rights District.

Honored at Wells Fargo Day of Giving Event

The YWCA Central Alabama was honored by Wells Fargo with a $1,000 grant at the company's Days of Giving ceremony at the Birmingham Zoo on September 18, 2012. The event was hosted by Mid South Central Area President George Trible and Area Business Banking Manager Jim Richardson.

The donation to the YW is among hundreds of contributions, each for $1,000, to nonprofits across the Mid-South made at community events.

YWCA Central Alabama Recipient of Department of Justice Grant

October 29, 2012

The YWCA Central Alabama was recently awarded a three year Legal Assistance for Victims (LAV) Grant from the Department of Justice: Office of Violence Against Women. The LAV Grant Program is intended to increase the availability of legal assistance needed to effectively aid adult and youth victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking who are seeking relief in legal matters arising as a consequence of that abuse or violence.

YWCA Central Alabama Recipient of Grant Funding from PNC Foundation

The PNC Foundation recently awarded the YWCA Child Development Center a grant for its Teaching Understanding for Math and Science (TUMS) initiative. The TUMS initiative enhances how teachers teach math and science and incorporates technology to promote learning. The grant funding was used to provide document cameras, LCD projectors and tablets. The use of these materials allow for more in-depth demonstrations and teaching making the hidden process of thinking visible.
