YWCA’s My Sister’s Closet (MSC) is a resale boutique with a high-end feel providing no-cost or low-cost finds nestled in the heart of downtown Birmingham. What started in 1986 as a small venture to help domestic violence survivors find clothing for interviews, court appearances, and work settings has grown to a go-to destination for women of all backgrounds. The boutique provides new and gently used clothing, apparel, and accessories at no cost to women escaping domestic violence, in shelter, or in extreme life transition in an atmosphere that is welcoming, supportive, filled with dignity, and designed to make them feel special. MSC also provides that same high-end shopping experience and access to paying customers desiring the most fashionable frugal finds at unbelievably low costs. It’s not surprising to peruse the racks of My Sister’s Closet and find designer items, direct from the store merchandise, wardrobe necessities, and unique finds for as little as $5. Proceeds from MSC benefit the programs and services of YWCA Central Alabama. My Sister’s Closet, please contact or 205-703-5510.

My Sister’s Closet is a staple within YWCA’s Economic Empowerment focus. YWCA Central Alabama’s Economic Empowerment (EE) emphasis is purposed to build a sustainable bridge between the community and organizations toward supported workforce development, resource provision, creative programming, entrepreneurship, and economic advancement. Current EE areas of impact executing the YW’s mission of eliminating racism and empowering women include AmeriCorps (through August 2021), Family Resource Center, My Sister’s Closet, and EE Workforce Development.

When Can You Shop or Donate?

My Sister’s Closet is located at 2324 3rd Avenue North and is open Monday-Thursday from 9 am-1 pm. Due to COVID safety measures, MSC accepts appointments for case manager referrals and appointments for specified donations. Donation drop-offs in easily identifiable containers, void of hangers, bags, or shoe boxes can be scheduled with the store coordinator at Due to capacity, we are only able to accept new and gently used, laundered, in-season items at this time.

Who Gets to Serve?

My Sister’s Closet Coordinator, Ayana Jointer, has a passion for people. Her first opportunity with YWCA was in May 2017 as a Victim Advocate Specialist at Our Place Shelter in Pell City while she also managed a career as a Child Abuse and Neglect investigator with Jefferson County Department of Human Resources. The call to serve the women at YWCA elevated in 2018 when she accepted a part-time Sales Associate role at My Sister’s Closet. That part-time role evolved into her full-time position at the helm of the MSC resale boutique in January 2021.

What Else Do We Do?

In addition to shopping, donations, and referrals, MSC is also known community-wide for efforts like PromPalooza, pop-up shops, seasonal clearance sales, traveling professional development seminars, partnerships with local nonprofits, and more.
