The YWCA Central Alabama offers affordable housing opportunities for low-income single women with children (no male children over age 12) pursing a life of stability in a safe and nurturing environment.
The YWCA maintains 14 furnished, two-bedroom apartments in downtown Birmingham. Monthly rent, which includes utilities, varies by income. Each two-bedroom apartment unit includes a galley kitchen equipped with a stove, microwave, refrigerator and sink and a private bathroom with a toilet, sink and shower. Community laundry machines are located on each floor. To view an apartment unit, click here.
The YWCA has 24-hour staff coverage. Access to housing floors is limited to residents and guests. Overnight male visitors over the age of 12 are not allowed. A security guard is on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Women with children interested in assistance must meet the following criteria:
Household must meet an annual income threshold of $11,000. The applicant's income may not exceed applicable income limits designated for this property; these income limits change annually and are based on HUD income limits for the area and household.
If you believe you or someone you know is in need of permanent housing and might meet the criteria noted on this site, email the housing office or call 205.322.7867.
Note: The YWCA accepts Shelter Plus Care (S+C) and Public Housing and Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8), though having such assistance is not a requirement for housing.
