YWCA Central Alabama’s Public Policy Priorities Toolkit is a resource for all who support our mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. For more than a century, YWCA Central Alabama has stood up for social justice and worked diligently to help families and strengthen communities. The YW regularly engages in social action to be a voice for the community we serve and to advance our mission. That’s YWe EDUCATE, ENGAGE & EMPOWER!
 

Our Health & Safety Priorities
– Advocate for Safety for Survivors of Domestic Violence
– Reauthorize Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)
– Reauthorize the Family Violence and Prevention Services Act (FVPSA)
– Support trauma-informed care for children & families exposed to violence & abuse
– Support state policies that protect victims of domestic violence

– Support the expansion of Medicaid in Alabama

Our Empowerment & Economic
Advancement Priorities
– Support the Thirty Days to Pay bill, which would make payday loans more affordable
– Support efforts to address excessive court fines and fees
– Support funding for Alabama Affordable Housing Trust Fund
– Support full funding for the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS)
– Protection of SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as Food Stamps)

Quality Education for All
– Support efforts to enhance early education, including expanded availability of quality childcare, supporting Head Start, and supporting state-funded Pre-K
– Support efforts to disrupt the School-to-Prison Pipeline, particularly as related to training for School Resource Officers

Civil and Human Rights
– Promote a full and fair census to ensure that all people, including those living on the margins, are counted
– Support efforts to register voters
– Pass the End Racial (and Religious) Profiling Act (ERRPA)
