It doesn’t take much to fall in love with the girls and boys in YWCA Central Alabama’s KIDS Korner child development program for children of homeless families. One look at their smiling faces and it’s obvious that they deserve the best future possible.
That’s why more than 650 guests at the 11th Annual KIDS Korner Luncheon opened their hearts, purses and wallets to invest so generously in their lives. The event, which is a project of the Junior Board and was held February 22 at the BJCC, raised more than $171,231 (and counting) and will help ensure that the YW can continue to provide a safe, loving place for the children to learn, play and grow.
“I look out at this amazing crowd, and I see power and I see compassion,” Luncheon Co-Chair Taylor Cooper told the guests. “We have the power to help make a difference. We have the power to invest in a precious child’s future and the power to help break the cycle of poverty, because that’s exactly what a top-notch, nationally-accredited child development program like KIDS Korner can do.”
Guests at the luncheon met Katie and her children, who came to the YW after fleeing a domestic violence situation. KIDS Korner gave her children a fabulous start in life and allowed Katie to focus on rebuilding her life and finding a job. “I want my kids to be successful, I want them to be happy and safe,” she said. “If I didn’t have the YW to come to, I don’t know where we would be. It definitely gave me a chance to put my life back on track.”
The event would not have been possible without the leadership of co-chairs Taylor Cooper and Yawanna McDonald and members of their hardworking committee: Tenley Armstrong, Mary Cox Brown, Yonti Brown, Mary Kathryn Bryant, Megan Chenoweth, Dana Cockrell, Suzanne Echols, Jeris Gaston, Anne-Morris Hackney, Brenda Hackney, Kayla Lawrence, Helen McDougald, Kathryn McNorton, Katherine Miller, Elisa Nelson, Jessica O'Rear, Breauna Peterson, Mandy Powell, Mary Elizabeth Roberson, Allison Schuver, Lacey Scott, Tanya Shunnara, Callen Thistle, Ann Watford, Ginny Willings and Whitney Wright.
