YWCA Junior Board Makes Powerful Impact on the Community

July 24, 2015

Whether they were raising money to support the YWCA Central Alabama’s child development program for homeless children, convincing men to walk in red high heels to spread awareness about domestic violence or passing out prizes at the Fall Festival, members of the YW Junior Board made quite an impact during the 2014-15 term.

“These fabulous women have so much energy and drive, and we are fortunate that they are willing to share their talents with the YWCA,” said Yolanda Sullivan, CEO. “I am so grateful for this amazing group and for the passion they have for our mission.”

One of the main objectives of the YWCA’s Junior Board, which turns 30 this year, is to support KIDS Korner, the YW’s child development program for homeless children. The group raised $136,450 through the annual KIDS Korner Luncheon, which is held each February and provides vital funding for the nationally-accredited program. Junior Board members also hosted a Fall Festival and ice cream social for the children, and they treated teachers to an appreciation lunch.

In addition, the hardworking group organized the second annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® event that put the focus on domestic violence and the services the YW provides for victims. Publicity surrounding the event helped elevate the conversation within the community.

“I cannot imagine that there is a more dedicated Junior Board anywhere,” said Laura Sherling Dunning, outgoing president. “The Junior Board’s ownership of the KIDS Korner Luncheon has impacted the children we love and nurture in a way we haven’t seen in the event’s eight-year history. And of course, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® continued to be a great success this year, reaching literally thousands of people in our community and potentially saving lives.”

In typical fashion, the members opted to forego an end-of-year-celebration and asked that the money allocated for the party be used to support the child development program.

The YWCA is grateful for the service of the members who are rolling off the Junior Board, including Hallie Bradley, Rachel Fry, Latonia Harris, Sissy Hembree King, Jesalyn McCurry, Katie Murnane, Erin Price, Richelle Ransom, Shannon Stewart and Jennifer Willings.

New members for the 2015-16 term are: Ellen McCauley Faust, Jane Johnson, Lauren Kallus, Yawanna McDonald, Elisa Held Nelson. Kelley Norwood, Lauren Pearson, Mandy McKnight Powell, Ashley Rhea, Lacey Scott, Cheryl Turner and Whitney Wright.

Mary Bradley Anderson will serve as the board’s new president, and Annemarie Axon will serve as both president-elect and co-chair of the KIDS Korner Luncheon, along with  Anne Lary. Ann Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Roberson will chair the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® event, and Taylor Cooper will be the new mission liaison.
