YWCA recruiting Birmingham businesses for summer teen workforce development program

May 10, 2021

In the wake of COVID-19, some community businesses desperately need workers. YWCA program provides paid interns to work at select area businesses three days per week June 15-July 2.

Birmingham, AL — (May 10, 2021) — For the past decade, YWCA Central Alabama has been instrumental in shaping career aspirations of teens while assisting community business partners with paid interns through CREW (Creating Responsible Educated Working teens).

The summer workforce development program for Birmingham area students in grades 9-12 returns June 7-July 2, 2021, with a hybrid virtual/in-person format. YWCA is recruiting community nonprofits, businesses, and corporations interested in hosting an intern this summer to join a slate of established CREW worksites.

CREW interns receive weekly compensation through YWCA Family Resource Center and work 9 a.m.-1 p.m. (virtually or in-person) at their worksites on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. On Mondays and Wednesdays, interns dive deeply into customized workforce and personal development training led by YWCA staff and volunteers. The 2021 CREW interns will also participate in this fall’s inaugural CREW Alumni Network.

Chosen CREW 2021 worksites must:

  • Provide a safe environment (COVID safety procedures required)
  • Provide meaningful work from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, June 15-July 2 (for a total of nine workdays)
  • Provide a brief description of the intern’s role
  • Sign a memorandum of understanding
  • Sign timesheets in person or virtually each time the intern reports to work

To host a CREW intern or learn more, contact YWCA Family Resource Center Coordinator Latasha J. Humphrey at 205-322-9922 ext. 461 or lhumphrey@ywcabham.org. Area high school students, from freshmen to seniors, may still apply for CREW.
