Welcome 2021 Board & Officers

During its November 2020 regularly scheduled meeting, YWCA Central Alabama Board of Directors elected a slate of new officers and announced its roster of 2021 Board members. The Board is led by newly elected Board President Andrea McCaskey of Momentum. CEO Dr. LaRhonda Magras pointed to YWCA Central Alabama’s mission to empower women and said "this outstanding group of women leaders put the power in empower. They are architects and titans in their respective industries. I am excited to be embarking on a new journey in 2021 with this amazing group of leaders.”

Women's Health Discussion

YWCA Central Alabama presented YWe Fit: The Better Health Care for Women Resolution, a virtual discussion about the current state of health care on Jan. 7. Watch the presentation that featured Dr. Elizabeth Jackson, UAB Director of Cardiovascular Outcomes & Effectiveness Research Outcomes, and Dr. Kierstin Kennedy, Clinical Associate Professor Chief, UAB Hospital Medicine. They were joined the YW's Dr. Idrissa Snider, Director of Social Justice, and Knetta Adkins, Coordinator of Community Education and Advocacy. Kudos to the YW's Knetta Adkins and Alexandria Means! Both have been selected from more than 100 applicants to participate in the Birmingham Women's Initiative.

The group consists of "people right here in our community who are poised to act to ensure the rights of women exist in a most excellent way." They received a letter from Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin and participated in the Women’s Initiative Kick-off/Orientation on Dec. 10.

Dec. 17 Mobile Market at FRC

YWCA Family Resource Center has partnered with Eastlake United Methodist Church to address food needs in the Woodlawn community. A low-cost Mobile Market offers fresh produce, pure honey, and other foods to residents and anyone who wishes to stop by and shop on Thursdays. Item prices don't exceed $6. The remaining 2020 dates for the market are Dec. 10 and 17 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The YWCA Family Resource Center is at 100 59th St S, Birmingham, AL 35212.

Sign Up for 2021 GED Classes

November 20, 2020

YWCA Central Alabama's Family Resource Center is now hosting GED preparatory classes. The GED test offers those who did not complete high school the opportunity to earn high school credentials. If an individual’s GED test scores are satisfactory, an official High School Equivalency Diploma will be awarded by the state of Alabama.

April Deal Literacy Center Open

Family members often recount stories to remember those they loved and lost. That’s exactly what the family of the late April Autrey Deal did during a literacy center dedication in her honor on Oct. 6, 2020. Deal's sister Emily Cooper, along with her husband Sam Cooper, joined cousins Ann and George McMillan to honor the legacy Deal left behind at the YW, fondly remembering the years she spent enthusiastically reading to the children of YWCA Central Alabama's Child Development Center.

Dec. 9 Domestic Violence Session

REGISTER NOW for YWCA Central Alabama’s Seeking Safety: Dynamics of Domestic Violence Online Training presented by Knetta Adkins, M.S., Coordinator, Community Education and Advocacy. Join the 9 a.m., Dec. 9 online conversation, raise community awareness, and learn the many signs of domestic violence. Take away some community resources, support services, and learn practical applications for supporting survivors of domestic violence. It is free to participate.
