Movies for the Movement

Each month, YWCA Central Alabama will feature movies that highlight, celebrate, or focus on promoting women's empowerment and communities of color. These films will also help to generate conversations addressing sexism, racism, classism, and other forms of oppression. You can watch these films alone or with your family. You can also use these viewings to engage a small group, with students, or at your workplace.

Books We're Into: March

Cicely Tyson’s remarkable career spanned more than 60 years before she passed at the age of 96. Tyson is recognized as a trailblazer, and her iconic roles in film and television are known for shattering negative stereotypes about Black women. Just As I Am: A Memoir is a beautiful reflection of her life, in her own words. 

CREW Camp for Teens

YWCA Central Alabama's Family Resource Center annually conducts CREW (Creating Responsible Educated Working teens). CREW is a virtual/in-person four- to seven-week summer enrichment program that primarily serves Woodlawn teens entering 9th-12th grades. However, other high school students within the Greater Birmingham area are also encouraged to apply for the June 7-July 2, 2021, camp. #YWCACrew2021

Virtual Purse & Passion April 29

March 17, 2021

YWCA Central Alabama's annual Purse & Passion program will be livestreamed Thursday, April 29 at 11:30 a.m. (CDT). Tune in to hear powerful stories from families the YW serves. Some Table Captains will also host viewing parties at their homes. Virtual guests can log in to view the livecast from anywhere. Don't miss the YW's largest fundraiser, which raises more than $600,000 each year to support YWCA Central Alabama's domestic violence services; child and youth development programs; and safe, affordable housing. My Sister’s Closet Now Open

YWCA Central Alabama’s My Sister’s Closet reopened to the public on March 15, 2021, after one year of closed doors due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Shoppers are welcome to visit the resale boutique at 2324 3rd Avenue North next to YWCA Central Alabama in downtown Birmingham. New store hours are 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Monday-Thursday under strict COVID-safe protocol.

Gen Z Has The Floor on March 26

Register for YWCA Family Resource Center's That's whY2K! Gen Z Has The Floor series. These FREE monthly virtual discussions are set to begin on Feb. 26-June 25, 2021, from 6-7:30 p.m. (CST). Registration is required. YWCA Family Resource Center is hosting roundtables where a panel of selected student co-hosts engage in important conversations about topics such as colorism, generational differences, social media influence, and more from a Generation Z standpoint. This platform allows youth to constructively express themselves regarding daily issues.

YWCA Honors Maggie Brooke and Welcomes New Board Members

It was an Annual Meeting unlike any other. A worldwide pandemic lingered and snow blanketed the South, but YWCA Central Alabama Board of Directors pressed on with its Feb. 16 Annual Meeting to welcome a new president and celebrate another.

The meeting was called to order by 2021 Board President Andrea McCaskey, who has given 15-plus years of service to the YW board. McCaskey, Momentum’s Director of Programs, began her role on Jan. 1.

Feb. 18 Pop-up Shop Reservations

YWCA’s My Sister’s Closet welcomes the public to a reservation-only Pop-up Shop on Thursday, Feb. 18 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

During scheduled time frames, a limited number of customers will be allowed to browse and shop (using the CDC's COVID-safe protocol) the best the resale boutique has to offer. 

YWe Talk Spotlights Economic Empowerment on Feb. 19
