Many students travel with their families while others participate in various other extra-curricular activities throughout the week. However, if you are a child who lives in an area shelter, opportunities like these are few and far between.

YWCA Hosts Pre-K Demonstration for State Lawmakers

Students from the YWCA Central Alabama Pre-K program were part of a demonstration for members of the Jefferson County area state legislative delegation which showcased hands-on math, science and technology activities.

“We were glad to host this press conference to encourage the public and legislature to get behind increased funding for Alabama’s Pre-K,” said Suzanne Durham, YWCA CEO. “All of this state’s children are our children.”

YWCA Empowers Teenage Girls by Hosting Prom Dress Giveaway

Prom season is just around the corner and for many local teenage girls, the dream of attending prom has become a reality thanks in large part to the Prom Dress Giveaway hosted by My Sister’s Closet, the YWCA Central Alabama’s resale shop.

YWCA Wins Birmingham Business Journal Nonprofit Award

The YWCA Central Alabama was honored to receive the Birmingham Business Journal’s Second Annual Nonprofit Award for organizations with revenue of over $5 million. The awards luncheon was held on March 14, at The Wynfrey Hotel. Over 200 people attended the event, which recognized the philanthropic work of nonprofit organizations and corporations around the Birmingham area. Finalists were selected by a panel of judges.

YWCA Partners with NCCJ to Host Anytown Alabama

The YWCA Central Alabama will once again partner with the National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ) to host Anytown Alabama on June 2 – 8, 2013, at Camp Hargis in Chelsea, Alabama. Applications are currently being accepted for this interactive and fun camp experience that is dedicated to creating capable leaders.

YWCA Holds Sixth Annual KIDS Korner Luncheon

The YWCA Central Alabama held its sixth annual KIDS (Kids in Distress) Korner Luncheon on Thursday, February 21, 2013 at the Cahaba Grand Conference Center. The luncheon benefited KIDS Korner, the YW’s child care program for children of homeless families. This year, more than 45 YWonderful women and men invited over 400 of their friends, co-workers and neighbors to the KIDS Korner Luncheon for a day of friend-raising and fundraising. This year’s luncheon raised over $86,000!

YWCA Receives A Special Delivery From Power Force Apparel

A special delivery was made a few weeks ago to the YWCA Central Alabama. Power Force Apparel LLC donated 200 pairs of shoes and athletic apparel for the families that we serve. The company's CEO, Guy Savage, says he's simply doing his part to give back to the community. 

YWCA Receives National Planning Award for Woodlawn Revitalization

The YWCA Central Alabama is honored to be the recipient of the American Planning Association's (APA) 2013 National Planning Excellence Award for Advancing Diversity & Social Change in Honor of Paul Davidoff. The award comes as a result of a multimillion dollar urban neighborhood revitalization effort implemented in the Woodlawn community. 

YWCA Central Alabama Hosting National Day of Action on Predatory Lending

The YWCA Central Alabama will be hosting a National Day of Action on Thursday, February 14th at 11:30 a.m. People from all across the Birmingham region are invited to gather together and call for changes to laws which allow certain lenders to charge predatory rates. These predatory loans have a devastating affect on our neighbors, and we want you to come out and lend your voice in the fight against abusive lending practices. 

YWCA Tours Jefferson County State Senators

January 25, 2013

The YWCA was pleased to have several members of the Jefferson County Senate Delegation at our Downtown and Woodlawn locations. The senators began by taking a walk through our NAEYC accredited child care center before heading to view firsthand the revitalization work that is being done in Woodlawn which includes four apartment complexes with 58 units of affordable housing, a KaBOOM! playground, Interfaith Hospitality House, a shelter for intact, homeless families, a community garden and a Family Resource Center.
