YW Recognizes Domestic Violence Awareness Month

During the month of October, the YWCA will help spread hope, health and healing throughout the central Alabama community by recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic Violence knows no social boundaries or class distinction. It affects thousands of women and families each year. In fact, Alabama is now ranked second in the nation in the rate of women killed by men. Domestic violence is one of the most misunderstood crimes in our state and often one of the least obvious.

YWCA Central Alabama Honored By Wells Fargo at Days of Giving Event

September 26, 2012

The YWCA Central Alabama was honored by Wells Fargo with a $1,000 grant at the company's Days of Giving ceremony at the Birmingham Zoo on September 18, 2012. The event was hosted by Mid-South Central Area President George Trible and Area Business Banking Manager Jim Richardson.

The donation to the YW is among hundreds of contributions, each for $1,000, to nonprofits across the Mid-South made at community events.

Smiles for Keeps Provides Dental Screenings for YW Kids

Participants in the YWCA's nationally accredited child care program recently received a special visit from "Al the Alligator" and the great staff from Smiles for Keeps Dentistry.

Originally located in the heart of the Woodlawn community, Smiles for Keeps was founded six years ago by local dentist, Dr. Roger Smith (the husband of a former Junior Board member) and Mary McSpadden with an overarching goal of providing quality dental care to children and teens in a fun and child-friendly environment.

YWCA AmeriCorps Members Commemorate National Day of Service and Remembrance

Every child deserves a safe place to play where they can develop their physical well-being and socialization skills while fostering their creativity and imagination. To commemorate the National Day of Service and Remembrance, AmeriCorps members from the YWCA Central Alabama recently refreshed the YW's downtown outdoor play space for the homeless and at-risk children participating in its child care program.

YWCA Central Alabama Hosts Walking Tour of YWoodlawn

Homelessness, domestic violence and racism are uncomfortable subjects that are often avoided in society, especially in social situations. In an effort to continue to encourage open dialogue about these problems that are plaguing our community, the YWCA Central Alabama will host a Walking Tour of YWoodlawn on Wednesday, September 12th - this is the third event in the YWhisper series.

YWCA Holds Fourth Annual Luncheon in St. Clair County

The YWCA Central Alabama held the Fourth Annual Purse & Passion St. Clair County Luncheon on August 23rd at The Beacon in Pell City, Alabama. The Luncheon, chaired by YW Board member Dr. Jenny Gauld, raised over $54,000 to support Our Place, the YWCA's domestic violence shelter in St. Clair County that offers a broad array of domestic violence services to women and families in the area. 

YWCA Summer Intern Makes an Impact

After completing a summer internship with the YWCA's Social Justice department, Kelsie Overton, a student at Birmingham-Southern College (BSC), is returning to school with a new understanding of the broad array of programs and services provided by the YWCA.

Overton, a native of Nashville, was initially introduced to the YWCA during her Woodlawn Interim service-learning class at BSC. During that four week class, students focused on the developmental and educational issues facing Woodlawn and other communities in Birmingham.

YWCA Central Alabama Celebrate AmeriCorps Champions of Service

The YWCA Central Alabama "Building Communities, Bettering Lives" AmeriCorps program is pleased to recognize and congratulate its 2012 Champions of Service, Mary Chiles and Kellie Cosby.

Chosen by peers and staff, from among the 24 YWCA AmeriCorps members, Chiles and Cosby were honored for their outstanding service, leadership and initiative at a statewide AmeriCorps graduation ceremony last week in Montgomery.

YWCA Central Alabama Holds Graduation Ceremony for Summer CREW Participants

The YWCA Family Resource Center in Woodlawn was recently filled with laughter and smiles as 17 teenagers celebrated their graduation from the Summer CREW program, a partnership between the YWCA Central Alabama and the Woodlawn Foundation.

As the graduates entered the room, the growth that had taken place in these teenagers was evident. In eight short weeks, these young men and young women who initially entered the program with no expectations had blossomed into hard-working and responsible young adults equipped with valuable life skills that will serve them well for years to come.

YWCA Central Alabama To Host YWhisper Series of Events

Over 100 young professionals recently gathered atop the Kress Building to engage in "uncomfortable cocktail conversation" at the YWCA's inaugural YWhisper event.

YWhisper is a series of events designed to engage Birmingham young professionals and to highlight and promote the programs and services of the YWCA.

Homelessness, domestic violence and racism are uncomfortable subjects. It is the responsibility of the young leaders in this community to not only speak up, but to speak out about these important community issues.
